What is India's message - Spirituality or ...
Swami Vivekananda has discoursed at large on what is the rightful position of India in the league of nations. The enlightened person that he was, his thoughts create a different universe for us to live in - an environment in which each entity strives for the other's benefit.
On introspection however, i start getting doubts. Every country tries to cultivate an identity for itself, one that distinguishes it from other societies. Indians take shelter under such terms as culture and spirituality when discussions about such an identity surface. A person who has not done even a half an hour of meditation in his entire life, will suddenly represent the spiritually enlightened masses of the world. Not only do we lay (a questionable) claim to this treasure of our ancestors, we even offer to guide others in the path to salvation.
I think there was once an India where the objective of every person here was to be spiritually enlightened. All actions of the people were guided by this sole reason. While not everyone can reach the levels of a Buddha or Vivekananda, but just the positive environment which is created due to such strife on the part of the people to attain the Truth - this is enough to guide those who need it.
Today however, becoming a consumerism hub, pursuing different goals (making money), imitating the west in its worst behavior - we no longer hold claims to being the spiritualistic society that we were. Still, in some places, the same environment can be found today. But India as a whole, is not any more the cultural hub nor the spiritual spearhead.
Taking recourse to the same old reasons of spirituality in todays scenario amounts to hypocrisy on the part of the citizens. Today the role of India has been altered, and altered due to the actions of its populus. We should accept this fact and try to create a new niche for ourselves in the league of nations as it exists today - the "Knowledge driven society". Not money-driven, but knowledge driven. Money and prosperity will follow. We need knowledge first, and such expertise that is not imitable, nor destroyable.
Sprituality is also knowledge, knowledge of the one Truth of the universe, knowing that the body is but a medium, and you are detached from it. What you see in the mirror is not you, its just a form that you require to stay in. The real you, is someone inside the body, he who knows everything, but you push him aside in trying to please the external other.
We may once again be able to create the spirituality driven society that we were. And when we do that after becoming experts at discovering and disseminating knowledge, then we will truly be representive of the world of the spirit. Then we can be the guides to the path of salvation. Till then lets be humans, and accept that we need to go a long way...
