What/Where is the Motivation?
Sometimes we look at a person and are amazed at the dedication/motivation with which he/she do their most regular, day to day, mundane work. I think its not the dedication or motivation that is reflected, its the love with which they do it. And they are not the same.
There are two reasons why people do their work with all the care:
1. They really love what they are doing and want to give it their best
2. They like what they are doing, but are more conscious of preventing themselves from embarassment should something go wrong with their work.
The difference lies, of course, in who we consider to be our judge. In the second case, its the supervisor or the people who are directly affected by the work. In the first case, its our own conscience. This now creates the dividing line between the quality of the concluded work in both the cases.
In the second case, the work is judged by a third person's intellect. Hence, it need be only good enough to fool the supervisor to be judged as satisfactory :). And that is very easy to do compared to the first one. In the first case, you are the critic of your own work. There's this bug in your head which doesnt let you sit peacefully until you do the best of the job you have got.
There's no escaping the conscience, and if you make it your guide, your judge in all things you do, perfection will surely come. The rewards of a job well done are also equally perfect. One gets a conscience who is one's friend, counselor. There is a feeling of calm inside, in the regions where the thoughts form (soul/heart/brain - whichever way you would like to think). And as a bonus, your self confidence rises.
There is no critic so harsh as one's conscience. At the same time, there can be no friend so true as one's conscience again. It depends on what you make yours to be. Dont be driven by the world's thinking. Think for yourself.
And do take time to watch the look on your friends face, when you smile meaningfully at something they are saying. You are actually conversing with your conscience, and they are wondering whats going on...
(Thanks to my friend Vinod for suggesting this topic to write on).
